Teen & Adult Spoon Carving Workshop

Join us outdoors for a full day of spoon carving and connecting to the land and community. We’ll dive into the craft of spoon carving using essential tools and locally sourced green wood.

On this Fall day, we’ll stay warm gathered around a fire underneath a covered pavilion structure. This workshop is 13+ due to the carving techniques that will be taught and sharp tools required.

Throughout the day there’ll be 1-on-1 instruction and support to set everyone on the path to create their own wooden spoon. Participants will leave with the knowledge and tools to continue their journey of spoon carving.

In this class you will:

    • Receive thorough introduction to green wood spoon carving
    • Learn to use the 3 main tools in spoon carving safely:
      • Sloyd knife
      • Carving hatchet
      • Spoon knife (hook knife)
    • Receive 1-on-1 support from an experienced spoon carver
    • Leave with a finished or closely finished spoon
    • Have the tools and knowledge to pursue the craft outside of this course

About the Instructor

A photo of this workshop's instructor, Henry Gartner.

Henry Gartner – Henry Gartner was born and raised in rural Greenwich NY. Growing up in a farming community, he found a love for the outdoors at an early age. As a Farm & Wilderness camper when he was a young teen, Henry refined his skills for spoon carving and creating friction fire. He came to the Hudson Valley to study at SUNY New Paltz, where he graduated with a degree in mathematics. Henry can be found in the Gunks year-round, trad climbing and mountain biking. When there is snow to be skied Henry shreds on tele gear. His two moms could not be happier that he has chosen to work for an organization fostering social justice.
