This September every sixth grade student in the Kingston Middle Schools joined Wild Earth for a day of firemaking, campfire cooking, wild edibles, awareness games, wilderness handicraft, and good ole fashioned fun in the great outdoors.

It is amazing to see the students bursting with enthusiasm, joy, and confidence after a day in the woods!

Now that it’s October all of the Kingston fifth graders have started coming out for their fall field trip to Wild Earth!

These field trips mark the kick-off of a four-year collaboration between Wild Earth and the Kingston City School District.

Starting this fall, students are participating in 20 contact days of Wild Earth programming including:

1) A fall and spring full-day nature immersion field trip.

2) “Guided recess” during the school day for all, each week.

3) An after-school program each week for 40 economically disadvantaged students.

4) A teacher development day where teachers experience the same “day in the woods” as their students.

5) A peer mentoring program for high school students who have graduated the program.

This project has been made possible by the generosity of Propel Capital, Scenic Hudson, Wild Earth’s Business Partners and private donors, Ulster Savings Charitable Foundation, Klock Kingston Foundation, the Maya Gold Foundation, the Dyson Foundation, Stewarts Shops, Teaching the Hudson Valley, and the Local Economies Project.

As a child Simon spent countless hours exploring the forest, streams and wetlands of his neighborhood in NJ. Simon has a B.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Vermont where he focused on the relationship between a healthy human psyche and a vibrant natural world. He has staffed and studied with various wilderness schools throughout the Northeast including the Institute for Natural Learning, White Pine Programs and the Vermont Wilderness School. When he’s not in the woods, Simon is designing and building websites and other internet solutions. More about Simon's work.

As an Instructor working with the Kingston Program, reading Isabella’s comment brightens my day. To be able to facilitate safe space where children have the opportunity to connect to, and learn about both nature and themselves is a profound gift. Thank you for your comment Isabella.
