The Art of Mentoring

A 5-day experiential training in nature connection, intergenerational mentoring, and creating a living culture of awareness.

Deep in all of our roots, there are stories of ancestors living in healthy, regenerative communities—villages where people of all ages were in deep relationship with the land, each other, and themselves.

The Art of Mentoring is designed to help us remember these old ways of awareness and mentoring and learn to apply them to our modern communities.

Now in its 20th year in Vermont, the Art of Mentoring offers powerful nature-based learning experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds. The week is facilitated by a veteran team of mentors, and over 70 staff members from around the US support the experience of 120 participants.

At the Art of Mentoring families, educators, naturalists, healers, musicians and storytellers, community members and leaders, ecological designers, peacemakers and facilitators, people with a strong connection to the land, and many others come together to support one another in deepening relationships with nature and becoming part of a joyful, engaged learning community.

At the Art of Mentoring concurrent programs for preschoolers, youth, teens, adults, and elders create a vibrant village, woven together by nature, music, and artful mentoring.

For Adult Participants

Guided by a team of experienced facilitators from throughout the Northeast, Art of Mentoring participants come together to experience and co-create a joyful, engaged learning community. You will walk away with tools and embodied practices of regenerative community design, mentoring techniques, deep nature connection, and an amplified passion for learning. Our hope is to activate and inspire you to create healthy nature-based communities right in your own backyard!

The course is taught through experiential exercises, lectures, storytelling, music, nature exploration, and group activities. We will be both indoors and outdoors throughout the week.

The skills and practices you will learn at the Art of Mentoring have been honed and put into practice by thousands of families, neighborhoods, and mentoring initiatives throughout our international network of over 300 affiliated schools and programs. These tools have also been powerfully incorporated in many other community and professional settings, including public and private schools, universities, at-risk youth programs, businesses, mental health practices, and more.

“Like no experience before it, the Art of Mentoring sent me home feeling grounded, renewed, inspired, and motivated to create cultural change. I wish everyone could have this experience.”

“I loved the land. I loved where we slept. I loved getting to share this with my family. We are already planning for next year!”

“The Vermont Art of Mentoring is a powerful, life-altering experience, somehow wrapped into one short week.”

“There are no words to express my profound gratitude.”

For Returning Adult Participants

The Art of Mentoring offers multiple advanced programs during the week for returning alumni to dive deeper into nature connection, cultural mentoring, and village building. Click the links below to learn more about each program for returning participants.

Adult Nature Immersion Program

Spend six days outdoors going deeper with nature connection, core routines, traditional skills, and sharing experiences of being fully alive. Like scouts on the edge of the village, your group will bring their stories and discoveries back to the Art of Mentoring community to build everyone’s curiosity and awareness. Learn more about the Adult Nature Immersion Program at the Art of Mentoring.

Earth Skills Immersion Program

Deep nature connection and a culture of continual mentoring come together in the Earth Skills Immersion Program where participants are handcrafting wild-harvested materials and using those tools and skills to draw themselves into deeper connection to nature through a culture of mentoring. Learn more about the Earth Skills Immersion Program at the Art of Mentoring.

For Youth and Teens

Youth Programs (ages 4-11 & 0-3 with caregiver)

4-11 year olds spend the week exploring the natural world through sensory awareness games, earth living skills, arts and crafts, music and storytelling. Through creative play and mentoring children tap into their unique interests and passions.

Meanwhile, for the 0-3 year olds, parents and little ones spend their days together playing, exploring the woods, and practicing the core routines of nature connection. Songs, games, stories, naps and snacks are also part of the adventure, along with activity sessions and “parent time” talking circles. Learn more about Youth Programs at the Art of Mentoring.

Teen Rendezvous (ages 12-17)

The Teen Rendezvous is an intensive wilderness experience for teenagers who are hungry for adventure, challenge, and connection with others who share a passion for the arts of wilderness living. Learn more about the Teen Rendezvous at the Art of Mentoring.

No matter what your background, the Art of Mentoring will support you in deepening your relationship with nature and becoming a part of a joyful, engaged learning community.
